Harmonizing Testing Standards and Processes Together: “Model Construction” Study Group of the BDG meets at RAMPF

At the end of March 2011, the “model construction” study group of the Bundesverband der Deutschen Giesserei-Industrie (BDG) (= Federation of German Foundry Industries e.V.) visited RAMPF Tooling GmbH & Co. KG in Grafenberg. The meeting of specialists for materials used in model and mold making was intended in particular to provide an opportunity to exchange ideas between material manufacturers, model makers and foundries. This also raised the question: How can production processing and testing guidelines be harmonized?

The presentation of 3D-shape

The presentation of 3D-shape recording using a 3D-laser scanner turned out to be really practical.

Some 30 participants were received at RAMPF Tooling Company’s Innovation Center for the meeting of the “model construction” study group. The full agenda included five interesting presentations from the company's Ash-land-Südchemie-Kernfest, Hilden, Simcast GmbH, Wuppertal, Ludwig Föbus GmbH Co KG, Gütersloh, DESCAM 3D Technologies GmbH, Ober-haching and Georg Fischer GmbH, Mettmann.

Experts from the various sectors discussed, amongst other things, the state of core making simulation, possibilities for cleaning exhaust nozzles or 3D-shape recording using laser scanners. In the module “Norms and standards”, the Head of the Study Group presented the new BDG Guideline “Testing the wear and tear of materials for use as models and core boxes”. Furthermore, the future work programs and perspectives of the Study Group were discussed.

“Maintaining the dialogue with all market participants in the foundry industry is important, so that we can jointly face up to the current challenges in energy and resource efficiency”, mutually concluded Heinz Horbanski, Managing Director of RAMPF Tooling GmbH & Co. KG, in his summary of the meeting.
